Archery hits the spot

Published on 29 Oct 2024

In September, Blind Veterans UK Archery Club gathered in Rustington for their bi-annual championships and presentation.

Chairman Clive Jones says “It’s fantastic to be able to come to Rustington as a group and shoot together. These weeks are our opportunity to catch up and enjoy a bit of friendly competition.”

Clive describes Archery as “a very welcoming and relaxed club. It’s so inclusive.” Archery offers members of any age, ability, or disability a calming and enjoyable sport. “I have PTSD but once I get the bow in my hand, I relax.”

The group also participated in team matches against RAF archers and local archery clubs and look forward to more tournaments in the future. Members shared what archery means to them and how they came to be involved in the club, unanimously expressing a desire to grow their membership and welcome new participants.

Peter Price, 75, shared how he began archery with support from Blind Veterans UK and has since won a silver medal in the world Archery para championships.
“When I joined the charity, I had a go at archery and decided to carry it on. Archery is now my life; it keeps me fit,” he says.

Peter describes using a tactile sight guide, assisted by his wife Linda, who acts as his spotter. “If I miss, it’s her fault!” he jokes.

Ron Jury, 71 has been doing archery for six years. “I talk about archery all the time. The great thing is how inclusive it is. I actually compete against fully sighted people”.

And Carol Davies, the club secretary, shared her experience as a B2 class archer. “The bow we use is exactly the same as fully sighted archers. Archery gets you out, keeps you active, and we have a great laugh.”
