Blind veteran to take on fundraising skydive
One of our blind veterans will be taking on a skydive this weekend to raise funds and awareness for our charity, as she credits us with rebuilding her confidence after sight loss.
Kay joined the Royal Navy in 1983 and served with the Special Boat Service, the Navy’s version of the SAS, aboard HMS Nelson. She then went on to work with nuclear submarines in Scotland, before retiring from the military in 1989. It was later in life at the age of 58 that she began to lose her sight.
"Just over a year ago I very suddenly lost basically all of my sight."
"In a period of two months I went from seeing normally to having just a tiny amount of light perception.
“Suddenly I wasn’t able to eat my food, and I couldn’t walk anywhere. Even just going up and down the garden I would fall over. I was working as a teacher and I could no longer drive to work.
“I was in a really dark place. But luckily Blind Veterans UK were there for me. I honestly don’t know what would have happened to me without them."
Kay's skydive will take place in Bridington on Saturday, 17 February. She will be jumping from 10,000 feet to give back for the support she has received. Kay continues:
“They helped me get out and about, and gave me the confidence to get my life back. They made me realise that there was a life after sight loss.
“Blind Veterans UK have given me devices for the kitchen which mean I can still cook. Scales that talk to me and a smart speaker which can read a recipe out in steps.
“The charity has helped me so much that I wanted to do something to give back to them. So to anybody reading this, please consider donating to my JustGiving page, and know that your generosity will go a long way to supporting the life-changing work the charity does.”
Show your support for Kay and help her give back.
