Do you serve in the British Armed Forces as a regular or reserve? Or perhaps you lead a cadet unit or a military training academy?

We're looking for proactive military personnel to join our Military Sight Loss Champions pilot scheme and make a real difference to the lives of vision-impaired veterans.

Could you be a champion?

What's a champion?

That depends on you. A 'champion' could be an individual, division, squadron, regiment, cadet unit or an entire establishment, depending on how you want to get involved.

What do they do?

They help provide opportunities for vision-impaired veterans. You might do this by volunteering, fundraising, helping out at events, or becoming an advocate for eye health and sight loss.

Who can be one?

Anyone in the military. You may have experience of sight loss through family, or simply want to help vision-impaired veterans get more out of life. Whatever your story, we'd love to hear from you.

How to get involved

There are three main ways for champions to take part: volunteering, fundraising and education. You could also lend us your mess for an event.

Volunteering

As someone with an understanding of service life and the camaraderie that makes it so special, you already possess the unique volunteering skills we need. Not only will you meet veterans with extraordinary tales to tell, but you'll also learn about the reality of living with sight loss. We have opportunities for both cadets and military regulars and reserves.

Fundraising

Would you like to build teamwork, boost morale and demonstrate the core values of the Armed Forces? As a champion, you can take on a fundraising challenge such as 'Do it for veterans', or do something of your own. Whatever you do, you'll be helping us provide the support, rehabilitation and equipment our veterans so desperately need.

Education

One in five people will suffer some degree of sight loss in their lifetime. Our champion educators are our military advocates for eye health and sight loss, spreading the word about our services to veterans, booking our inspirational speakers for events, and promoting our education resources.

Mess hosting

This is a quick and simple way to Champion us as an entire unit. According to our blind veterans, meeting others in the same boat is one of the most powerful aspects of our rehabilitation work, while attending one of our organised military dinners provides an opportunity to celebrate military history and culture. Support us by offering your mess and meeting our veterans, and we'll cover all event costs.

How much time do champions give?

Your commitment to us

We know that service life can be demanding, so as a champion your level of support is completely up to you. It may be that you fundraise for us while deployed, or volunteer each month at a local coffee morning. Or you might want to provide a venue for our veterans to meet, or simply act as a point of contact for our inspirational speakers.

Our commitment to you

We're completely committed to supporting our champions and our dedicated team and are always on hand with guidance when you need it. We can promise you a highly rewarding experience as we fight to overcome the challenges of sight loss together.

Why be a champion?

Sight loss turns lives upside-down, but our support and rehabilitation helps veterans of all ages go on to live fulfilling lives - whether they lost their sight on or off the battlefield. Read what Rob, Ken and Simon have to say about our life-changing work.
