Military Sight Loss Champions: volunteering
Volunteering for Blind Veterans UK can be incredibly fulfilling. Not only will you get to meet veterans with extraordinary stories to tell, but you'll also become part of a nationwide movement to support their lives.
Our volunteers are vital to the work we do and, as champions, you can contribute your leadership experience, caring attitude and, of course, your sense of humour.
We offer two categories for Military Sight Loss Champion volunteers:
Cadet volunteering opportunities:
Purpose
To support our blind veterans, and act as a champion for sight loss in your local community.
Responsibilities
The main responsibilities for cadet volunteers include:
- Supporting our blind veterans at local events
- Educating others about sight loss and eye health
- Promoting our fundraising challenges and activities
Duty of care
Cadet volunteers must be escorted by a Cadet leader over the age of 18 who is responsible for their duty of care.
Benefits
Champions who 'care in the community' can make a real difference to people’s lives. On a personal level, this can be highly rewarding and fulfilling while, professionally, it can help demonstrate the attributes required for promotion in rank.
Military (regulars and reserves) volunteer opportunities:
Purpose
To support our blind veterans and act as a champion for sight loss by educating service personnel and veterans, and their families.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities for military volunteers include:
- Educating your fellow service personnel on sight loss and eye health
- Engaging with our national media and campaigns
- Letting us know about your military events
- Speaking at national and local Blind Veterans UK events
- Promoting our fundraising challenges and activities
- Telephone befriending our blind veterans
- Presenting in-house awards to our veterans at local events
Benefits
Individuals, groups, units, or establishments that choose to volunteer as Champions will make a tangible difference to the lives of blind veterans, and support those who continue to serve and their families.
Training and support
Champions will complete our volunteer training, which is quick and easy and can be delivered online.
Champions are supported by our National Military Lead who's always on hand to answer your questions.
